From the United States to United Response: Anne’s social work placement ‘teaches you more than any other job’
The big move
Anne’s journey is as unique as it is inspiring. Originally from the United States, she discovered the differences in the care system when moving to the UK.
This observation sparked her interest in United Response, which she describes as a “positive place to be.”
What Anne enjoys most
One thing Anne loves about being a student social worker at United Response while studying for her social work qualification is the people she has the privilege to meet.
The co-workers here are very person-centred and passionate about what they do.
This enthusiasm, passion, and dedication are contagious, and she adds that it has given her a tremendous boost of confidence.
From teaching classes on hydration to participating in production activities, including the ‘This is me’ production in Nottingham – every day is a new adventure.
More than just a job
Anne believes that being open-minded is a core value for any support worker.
You encounter individuals who see the world differently to you
She emphasises the importance of viewing the individuals we support not as their disabilities but as people with unique strengths.
Embracing new experiences
A typical day for Anne involves creative thinking and suggesting enjoyable activities for those who might not know what they’d like to do.
During her journey, Anne has learnt the strength and courage of the people she supports.
They’ve come a long way to step outside, and their willingness to experience the world with you is really powerful.
Anne’s journey at United Response has been an enlightening one, filled with growth, learning, and fulfilment.
Working with people with disabilities is viewed as hard by society, but you don’t realise the skills you have until you’re in the situation. It teaches you more than any other job.
