Loreto College student and Manchester City fan Ben was on the hunt for work experience in anything football-related.

With support from his Job Coach Julie, he’s now on a supported internship two days a week at the National Football Museum, showing visitors around and talking about the football memorabilia.

“It’s been going really well,” said Ben. “Everyone is so nice and welcoming so it’s a lovely environment to work in.”

Julie is on hand to support Ben during his placement and on breaks, but he works independently most of the time.

“I would definitely recommend United Response to other people looking for a job,” he added.

A manager’s perspective

Ben’s manager Christian praised him for being so knowledgeable about football and having the confidence to talk to visitors of all ages about the different exhibits.

His advice for other employers or hiring managers is not to overlook jobseekers if they have access requirements:

Ben’s been a real asset to us, particularly in terms of his level of engagement with visitors.

He’s such a bubbly, outgoing person and we’ve been so impressed with his enthusiasm. He’s a really good fit for the role.

From Moss Side to Marseille: the launch

New for 2023, ‘From Moss Side to Marseille‘ is a collection of fine art portraits from Manchester artist Michael Browne, commissioned by former Man-U player Eric Cantona. Inspired by Renaissance art, it showcases famous sportspeople from history who fought for social or political causes.

Staff and volunteers were invited to the launch party, where they got to rub shoulders with famous footballers. Ben even managed to get selfies with Eric and Sir Alex!

The exhibition runs until 1 June 2023 with tours every day at 1pm, included in the admission price. The museum is fully wheelchair-accessible.

Career plans

Ben’s supported internship is until the end of the school term. Whatever his next move is, he knows he wants a career in the football industry.

Julie and Ben are already thinking about his future career – whether that’s football coaching, sports journalism or something else:

Ben’s a very confident young man, he’s very passionate about football and sports and he would make a great addition to any workplace.

As part of his internship Ben has recently started working one day a week as an Assistant Sports Coach at a local primary school, whilst continuing with his two days at the Football Museum.
