Announcing ‘Our life stories’ oral history project curated by people with learning disabilities, thanks to National Lottery players
We’re embarking on a transformative 27-month journey to capture and preserve the life stories of 50 people supported by United Response, thanks to generous support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF).
‘Our life stories’ will be curated by students with learning disabilities and autism, who will receive training in oral history methodologies and exhibition curation. The students will then be supported to conduct a series of in-depth interviews, workshops, and creative collaborations.
This exciting new peer-to-peer programme aims to celebrate the rich and diverse life stories of individuals with learning disabilities by:
- Capturing untold stories
People with learning disabilities have incredible life stories that often go unheard. This project aims to change that by providing a safe and supportive space for people taking part in the project to share their narratives.
- Celebrating achievements
We will spotlight the achievements and milestones of project participants, emphasising their contributions both to the programme and their communities.
- Educating and raising awareness
By sharing these stories, we hope to educate the public about some of the challenges that people with learning disabilities face, which we hope will promote greater understanding and inclusion.
- Preserving cultural heritage
‘Our life stories’ recognises these stories’ cultural and historical significance, preserving them for future generations to learn from and appreciate. Once the project is complete, the oral histories will be donated to the British Library and held in the national collection.
Our partnership
The National Lottery Heritage Fund’s generous funding has made this project possible. Their commitment to supporting initiatives that promote diversity, inclusivity, and the preservation of cultural heritage aligns perfectly with the goals of ‘Our life stories.’ We are deeply grateful for their support and excited about this project’s positive impact on our community and beyond.
