Running for a Legacy: our founder’s grandson prepares for the London Marathon

We caught up with him to talk about his journey to race day, why United Response is so close to his heart and what keeps him going when training gets tough.
“Charity was always a part of my family’s life”
“My grandad was always involved in charity work” says Daniel. “It wasn’t just about fundraising but making a real difference. It was always about giving back, something I remember speaking to him about when I was a child.”
“It was instilled in me very early on if life that if you’re in a lucky position, you should always help as much as possible.”
That philosophy has stayed with Daniel, shaping his perspective on the importance of inclusion and independence.
Training for 26.2 miles
After committing to run the 26.2 mile challenge, Daniel started his routine of running before work (rain or shine!), training 4-6 times a week and mentally preparing for the challenge ahead:
“It’s tough sometimes getting out of bed at 5am to go for a run, but I stay motivated by remembering why I’m doing it, and by thinking about all the people who have donated and supported me so far. My fiancé, friends and family have been amazing.”
Why United Response?
Daniel’s connection to United Response is personal and he has seen first-hand the impact that United Response has since it’s inception 50 years ago:
“I think what I’ve learned about United Response is how many different approaches there are to helping people. Whether that’s providing a support community, education, employment – it’s not just about providing care, it’s about making sure people have choice and control over their own lives” says Daniel.
Crossing the finish line
With just a few months to go until race day, Daniel is looking forward to crossing the finish line. “It’s been a long journey but I know that when I cross the finish line, it’ll be worth it.”
And as for post race celebrations?
“Apparently there’s free pizza at the end (laughs) which is a decent incentive. But honestly, I’ll probably just have a Guinness and then go home and hide my running shoes for a while…”
Daniel is part of team of 20 runners taking part in the world-famous London Marathon, which each raising a minimum of £1500 for United Response. Please support them as generously as you can.
