The last few weeks have been difficult, and often frightening, for disabled people. They have seen their disabilities, needs and livelihoods relentlessly debated, while they are left to worry about their future.

Welfare reform should be about ensuring people get the support they need. Not saving money to meet government targets. The cuts announced today, including the changes to PIP eligibility, will have significant consequences for many lives.

Lots of people we support want to work. But removing access to a crucial benefit is not the same as giving someone a job – in fact, it can mean giving them financial hardship instead. While some changes outlined today are welcome, such as ‘right to try’, the reduction in reassessments for those with the most serious health conditions, and increased funding for employment support, we are worried that disabled people’s lives just got harder, through no fault of their own.

It’s important that the Government hears from disabled people, people with health conditions and disability organisations about these changes. They are running a consultation on some of the measures shared today. It will run until 30 June. Click below to make sure your views are heard.
