How PBS works
We use a range of recognised tools to understand the relationship between behaviours that challenge, and other aspects of the person’s life and environment.
By understanding the person and how their behaviour is related to their circumstances, we can identify what needs to change – to reduce the likelihood of the behaviour happening again, and to support the person and others safely through a crisis when one does occur.
It is also important to improve quality of life and ensure the individual is fully engaged in order to reduce the likelihood of behaviour that challenges recurring in the future.
How we use PBS

Combining PBS with other approaches
We also combine PBS techniques with other core approaches and specialist techniques to make it more effective.
In particular, active support underpins Positive Behaviour Support because of its emphasis on systemic changes to the whole environment and in the way services focus on promoting the quality of life of the people we support – a critical element of reducing behaviours that challenge.
Active support not only provides conditions in which behaviour that challenges frequently decreases, it also builds a valuable foundation upon which PBS interventions can be built.
