On Tuesday 4th June, ITV showed an hour-long TV debate between Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer. A debate is where people say what they think about different topics.
-
The debate was called the leadership debate because they are the party leaders for the two biggest political parties in England that people can vote for in the General Election on the 4th July.
-
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said the Labour Party would make people pay around £2,000 more tax if they win the election.
-
Lots of people are worried about the cost of living. Keir Starmer said that Liz Truss made things like taxes more expensive. Liz Truss was the Conservative Prime Minister before Rishi Sunak.
-
Some people were worried that Keir Starmer did not clearly say if Labour would put taxes up or not but another Labour MP, Jon Ashworth said what Rishi Sunak was saying is ‘garbage’.
-
When they were asked about the NHS, both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer said they have family members who have worked in healthcare.
-
Both party leaders did not say much about their plans for social care. Between them, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer only spent 36 seconds talking about social care in the whole debate.
-
Some people think the debate was not long enough. They said that both leaders needed more time to talk about difficult things like taxes and immigration. They only had 45 seconds each to answer each question.
-
The company YouGov asked some people who they thought was better in the debate. 51% of the people they asked thought Rishi Sunak was better and 49% thought Keir Starmer was better.
-
On Friday 7th June BBC will show a debate with 7 people from the 7 biggest political parties in the General Election – Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party (SNP), Green Party, Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. It will be on TV from 7.30pm to 9pm on BBC One.
