1: Queen Elizabeth II has died
-
Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at her home in Balmoral Castle on Thursday 8th September 2022, aged 96 years old, surrounded by members of her family.
-
On Queen Elizabeth’s death, her oldest son – who we used to call Prince Charles or the Prince of Wales - immediately became King Charles III (the 3rd).
-
This is because the Royal Family works on a hereditary system. This means that the next King or Queen is usually the oldest child of the current King or Queen.
-
The King’s wife, Camilla, will now be called the Queen Consort.
-
The Queen’s funeral is expected to take place in less than two weeks at Westminster Abbey in London.
-
Her coffin will be moved to London on Monday, where it will lie in state for 3 days at Westminster Hall. Lie in state means it will be on show to the public so that they can say goodbye to the Queen.
-
It is expected that lots of people will travel to London to do this. The train strikes that were planned for the next few weeks have now been cancelled to help people get there.
-
A remembrance service is taking place on Friday 9th September at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, and senior ministers are invited.
-
On the same day, the new King Charles III will give a speech to the nation on TV for the first time.
-
The Government has announced 10 days of national mourning starting from today. This means all Union Jack flags must be flown at half-mast and books of condolences will be opened across the world where people can write messages for the Royal Family.
