The United Kingdom had a general Election on July 4th. The Labour Party won the election and now runs the Government.

Keir Starmer is the new Prime Minister. He is a trained barrister, which means he used to represent people in court and knows a lot about law.

Nigel Farage is also a Member of Parliament for the 1st time, after trying 7 times before and failing. His party, Reform UK, now has 4 MPs, including him.

2: Someone tried to kill Trump

On 14th July 2024, a man tried to kill Donald Trump, the ex-president of America, as he was making a speech at a campaign rally. A campaign rally is an event where someone who is hoping to become the next President tries to get more people to vote for them.

Thomas Matthew Crooks hid on the roof of a building to shoot at Trump. Trump was hurt but not badly injured. However, 1 person was killed and 2 others were also hurt by accident. The gun man was shot dead.

President Biden said there is no place for violence in American politics. People are upset that the police and Secret Service did not stop this happening.

On the 21 July, Joe Biden decided that he would no longer be the person competing with Donald Trump to be the next president. The Vice President Kamala Harris might try instead.

3: French election results

France had a legislative election. That is like a General Election in the United Kingdom. The results were surprising.

It looked like the right-wing National Rally party was going to win. Actually, the left-wing New Popular Front won the most Members of Parliament.

The New Popular Front did not win enough seats to form a government, and they cannot agree who should be the new Prime Minister. France cannot have another election for a whole year.

4: Wimbledon Championships

The Wimbledon Championships happened in early July. The tennis tournament is one of the 4 biggest for the sport.

The Men's Singles was won by Carlos Alcaraz from Spain. He also won it in 2023. The Women's Singles was won by Barbora Krejčíková from the Czech Republic.

Alfie Hewett is a British tennis player who uses a wheelchair. He won the Wheelchair Men's Doubles tournament with Gordon Reid. He also won the Wheelchair Men's Singles tournament.

The UEFA European Championship happened in late July. England made it to the finals but lost to Spain.
