Easy News: Ukraine wins some cities and towns back in war with Russia

1. 

   There is a war in Europe between Russia and Ukraine. The war has been going on for more than a year.

2. 

   The war started in February 2022. You can read an Easy News version of what happened from March 2022 here.

3. 

   At the start of the war, the Russian army moved into some of the towns and cities in Ukraine. This is called an invasion. The army tells the people living there what to do.

4. 

   The Ukrainian army stopped the Russian army from moving into the rest of Ukraine. But they could not make the Russians leave the parts of Ukraine they had moved into already.

5. 

   For the last year, the two armies have not moved. They have stayed where they are and attacked each other. Russia has also been shooting missiles into towns and cities in Ukraine.

6. 

   Countries like America, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France do not want Russia to win the war. They have been giving weapons to the Ukrainians to help them beat Russia.

7. 

   At first America did not want to give fighter planes to Ukraine. The Americans were worried that Russia would start attacking other places if the Ukrainian Army could fly and attack Russia.

8. 

   In May 2023, America changed their mind and said they would give the Ukrainian army planes. They will let the Ukrainian army have F-16 fighter jets, and teach them how to fly them.

9. 

   At the beginning of June 2023, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said their army was moving into parts of Ukraine where the Russian army was. They are fighting to get their land back but have only won back some areas.

10. 

    On the 6th of June, the Nova Kakhovka dam fell down. The dam was in one of the places in Ukraine which the Russian army had moved into.

11. 

    A dam is a wall across a river that either stops or limits the amount of water getting through.

12. 

    When the dam fell down, the water flooded the land near it. The flood has killed some people, and caused a lot of damage.

13. 

    Lots of people people believe that one of the armies made the dam fall down on purpose. The Russians say the Ukrainians did it, and the Ukrainians say that the Russians did it. In war, it is hard to know who is telling the truth.

14. 

    The flood makes it harder for the Ukrainian army to move. They can no longer cross the Dnieper river because the dam is not stopping water any more.

15. 

    The war has hurt a lot of people and cost a lot of money. People expect it to carry on for a long time.
