    1. The 2023 Wimbledon Tennis Championships took place in London between 3rd and 16th July.

    2. Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world. A tournament is a sporting event where people compete to be the best.

    3. There are events for men and women, for people playing tennis alone (called singles matches) or in teams of two (called doubles matches). There are also events for people in wheelchairs, and for players between 14 – 18 years old, called juniors.

    4. British players won three events this year. 17-year-old Henry Searle won the Junior Boys’ Singles, Mark Ceban won the Boys’ 14 and Under Singles and Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid won the Wheelchair Doubles.

    5. British player Andy Murray did not make it to the final because he lost in the 2nd round. He has won the Men’s Singles at Wimbledon twice before, in 2013 and 2016.

    6. This year, the Men's Singles final was won by Carlos Alcaraz from Spain, who beat Novak Djokovic from Serbia. They are the two best tennis players in the world.

    7. Novak Djokovic is 36 years old and has won Wimbledon 7 times before. Carlos Alcaraz is 20 and this was his 1st win at Wimbledon.

    8. The Women's Singles tournament was won by Markéta Vondroušová from the Czech Republic. She won against Ons Jabeur from Tunisia.

    9. The people running Wimbledon did not expect Markéta Vondroušová to do so well. She has now become the 10th best female player in the world.

    10. In 2022, athletes from Russia and Belarus were banned from playing in Wimbledon because their countries invaded Ukraine at the start of the war.

    11. In this year's competition, players from these countries were allowed to take part again, but they were not allowed to represent their countries. They had to enter as independent athletes instead.

    12. Just Stop Oil is a group who have protested a lot of sports recently. They are worried about climate change and interrupt events to get people to think about it. They interrupted two matches at Wimbledon this year.

    13. Many celebrities and important people came to watch Wimbledon. The Men's Singles final was watched by Prince William and the king of Spain.

    14. The BBC showed all of Wimbledon on television. More than twenty-five million people watched the men's final.
