Shared Lives really is something special, and people often have a brilliant time with their carer, going on holidays, getting out in the community and taking on things they never thought possible.

Our support can be a stepping stone towards independent living, but is also suitable for those with complex needs and/or those seeking long-term care. At the moment, United Response Shared Lives is only based in the Merseyside area.

If you’d like to find out more about Shared Lives for yourself, or someone you support, contact Vanessa at Vanessa.Perry@unitedresponse.org.uk.

What is an average day in Shared Lives?

Our person-centred support means an average day will look different for everyone!

Someone might be supported by their carer to gain employment, to volunteer in the community, or to spend time with friends. They might also be supported to go on holiday, to visit family, or to do something they’ve always wanted to do.

The heart of Shared Lives is family and the person being supported should expect to feel integrated into the family of their carer, spending time at family events and with their loved ones.

Who are our Shared Lives carers?

There are approximately 10,000 Shared Lives carers in the UK and they come from all backgrounds and walks of life. Some Shared Lives carers are already sharing their home with family, a partner, or even a few pets, while others will currently be living by themselves.

How do you choose who lives with who?

Shared Lives carers and people we support are then carefully matched, taking into consideration personality, similar interests, location, family dynamics, pets and anything else that is important. The person seeking support and the prospective carer will get the opportunity to get to know each other before deciding if they want to live together.
